Expert Lecture on Medicinal and Aromatic Plants at Stakeholders' Meet in Meghalaya Meghalaya | June 18th & 19th , 2026

A Stakeholders' Meet on Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MAPs) was organized in Meghalaya, bringing together representatives from government departments, research institutions, farmers' organizations, rural livelihood missions, entrepreneurs, and development agencies to discuss the immense potential of the medicinal and aromatic plant sector in promoting sustainable livelihoods and rural economic development.

As part of the programme, S.K. Babu, Project Director of Ecogreenunit Foundation, was invited as a resource person to deliver an expert lecture on "Medicinal and Aromatic Plants: Opportunities for Sustainable Livelihoods and Rural Entrepreneurship."

The lecture focused on the growing importance of medicinal and aromatic plants in the global economy and highlighted how India's rich biodiversity can be effectively utilized to create environmentally sustainable enterprises while improving the income of rural communities.

During the session, participants were introduced to the vast potential of cultivating commercially important medicinal and aromatic plants suitable for different agro-climatic regions. The presentation emphasized the importance of scientific cultivation practices, quality planting materials, sustainable harvesting methods, value addition, post-harvest management, and market-oriented production systems.

Special emphasis was given to the cultivation and commercial prospects of aromatic crops such as Vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanioides), citronella, lemongrass, palmarosa, and other essential oil-bearing plants. The lecture explained how these crops contribute to soil conservation, climate resilience, water resource management, carbon sequestration, and diversified farm incomes.

The participants also gained valuable insights into the extraction of essential oils, product development, branding, packaging, quality standards, and domestic as well as international market opportunities. The importance of integrating medicinal and aromatic plants with existing farming systems was highlighted as an effective strategy for increasing farm profitability while conserving natural resources.

The session further explored the role of medicinal and aromatic plants in supporting the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, nutraceutical, food, wellness, and herbal industries. Discussions covered opportunities for establishing rural processing units, promoting women-led enterprises, strengthening Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), and creating value chains that generate long-term employment in rural areas.

An interactive question-and-answer session enabled stakeholders to discuss practical issues related to cultivation techniques, nursery development, financial support, government schemes, processing technologies, and market linkages. Participants actively engaged with the speaker and appreciated the practical, field-based approach presented during the lecture.

The Stakeholders' Meet served as an important platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and strategic planning to strengthen the medicinal and aromatic plant sector in Meghalaya. The programme reinforced the need for coordinated efforts among government agencies, technical institutions, community organizations, and entrepreneurs to promote sustainable cultivation, value addition, and market development.

Orientation Programme on Sustainable Livelihood Opportunities for Women Farmers in Cherrapunji, Meghalaya Date: 17 June 2026

 

As part of its ongoing mission to promote sustainable rural livelihoods and women-led entrepreneurship, Ecogreenunit Foundation successfully conducted a comprehensive Orientation Programme on Sustainable Livelihood Opportunities for women farmers in the Cherrapunji region of Meghalaya on 17 June 2026.

The programme witnessed the enthusiastic participation of around 100 women farmers representing various villages across the region. The objective of the programme was to introduce eco-friendly, income-generating enterprises based on locally available natural resources and to create awareness about sustainable livelihood opportunities that can enhance household incomes while protecting the environment.

The orientation focused on four key livelihood sectors:

Areca Leaf Plate Manufacturing

Participants were introduced to the concept of converting naturally fallen areca palm leaves into biodegradable plates, bowls, food containers, and other eco-friendly products. The session highlighted the complete value chain, including raw material collection, processing, machinery, production techniques, quality standards, marketing opportunities, and the growing demand for sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics. The women farmers learned how this enterprise can generate year-round employment with minimal environmental impact.

Banana Fibre Extraction and Value Addition

The programme showcased innovative methods of extracting fibre from banana pseudostems, which are generally treated as agricultural waste after harvesting. Technical experts demonstrated how banana fibre can be converted into high-value products such as mats, handicrafts, ropes, decorative items, paper, and eco-friendly textiles. Participants gained insights into machinery requirements, production processes, market opportunities, and the economic potential of converting agricultural residues into profitable products.Lantana camara Craft Making.

One of the major highlights of the orientation was the introduction of Lantana camara Craft Making. Lantana, an invasive weed that poses ecological challenges in forest ecosystems, was presented as a valuable raw material for producing attractive handcrafted furniture, baskets, utility products, decorative articles, and home décor items. The session demonstrated how the removal and productive utilization of lantana contributes simultaneously to forest conservation, biodiversity restoration, and livelihood generation for rural communities.

Entrepreneurship and Market Linkages

Participants were also sensitized on entrepreneurship development, enterprise planning, quality production, branding, packaging, market access, financial assistance, and the importance of forming Self Help Groups (SHGs) and producer collectives. The programme emphasized value addition, sustainable production practices, and creating rural enterprises capable of serving both domestic and export markets.

Interactive Learning Session

The orientation featured interactive discussions, technical presentations, question-and-answer sessions, and practical demonstrations that enabled participants to gain a comprehensive understanding of each livelihood opportunity. The women farmers actively interacted with the resource persons, clarifying technical aspects related to production, investment, raw material availability, profitability, and market potential.

Impact of the Programme

The orientation programme significantly enhanced awareness among the participants regarding sustainable entrepreneurship based on locally available resources. Approximately 100 women farmers acquired practical knowledge about establishing eco-friendly micro-enterprises capable of generating additional income while promoting environmental conservation and circular economy principles.

The participants expressed keen interest in undergoing advanced hands-on training programmes and establishing community-based production units in their respective villages. The programme also opened avenues for future collaboration with government departments, rural livelihood missions, financial institutions, and Self Help Groups for implementing these livelihood initiatives at the grassroots level.

A comprehensive Orientation Programme for farmers and women self-help groups was successfully organized at Mitta Nula Alli Village in Dharmapuri District, Tamil Nadu. The programme aimed to create awareness and provide knowledge on sustainable livelihood opportunities, value-added rural enterprises, and eco-friendly income-generating activities.

The training programme covered a wide range of sectors including Areca Leaf Plate Manufacturing, Banana Fibre Extraction and Product Development, Mat Weaving, Handicrafts Production, Coir Pot Making, Biochar Production, Vetiver Cultivation, Aloe Vera Cultivation, and Microgreens Cultivation. These sectors were carefully selected to promote self-employment, entrepreneurship, environmental sustainability, and enhanced rural income.

Around 250 farmers, women entrepreneurs, self-help group members, and rural youth actively participated in the programme. Experts provided detailed insights into the technologies, production methods, market opportunities, value addition techniques, and business prospects associated with each sector.

Special emphasis was given to the utilization of locally available natural resources for generating sustainable income. Participants learned how areca leaf waste can be converted into eco-friendly disposable plates, how banana fibre can be transformed into value-added products, and how coir-based products and handicrafts can create employment opportunities for rural households. Awareness was also created on the benefits of biochar for soil health improvement and carbon sequestration.

The agricultural sessions focused on the commercial cultivation of Vetiver and Aloe Vera, highlighting their medicinal, industrial, and economic importance. Demonstrations on Microgreens Cultivation introduced participants to future food concepts and nutritional farming practices, enabling them to produce healthy foods even in limited spaces.

A comprehensive hands-on training programme on Micro Greens Cultivation, Vetiver Cultivation, Aloe Vera Cultivation, and Bee Keeping was successfully organized at Coimbatore on 30th May 2026. The programme was attended by a large number of farmers, rural entrepreneurs, and household women who were eager to explore sustainable income-generating opportunities in the agriculture sector.

The training programme focused on promoting eco-friendly and profitable agricultural practices that can be adopted on a small scale with minimal investment. Participants received practical demonstrations and field-level exposure to various cultivation techniques and value-added opportunities.

The Micro Greens Cultivation session highlighted the growing demand for nutrient-rich microgreens in urban markets. Participants learned seed selection, tray preparation, growing techniques, harvesting methods, and marketing strategies.

The Vetiver Cultivation training emphasized the commercial importance of vetiver grass for its applications in soil conservation, perfumery, handicrafts, and value-added products. Farmers were educated on cultivation practices, maintenance, and income opportunities associated with vetiver farming.

The Aloe Vera Cultivation segment provided detailed guidance on cultivation methods, medicinal and cosmetic applications, harvesting techniques, and market potential. Participants gained valuable insights into establishing aloe vera plantations for long-term income generation.

The Bee Keeping training attracted significant interest as participants learned modern apiculture practices, hive management, honey extraction methods, colony maintenance, and the role of bees in enhancing crop pollination and productivity.

The programme aimed at empowering farmers and household women by providing practical knowledge and entrepreneurial skills. Many participants expressed enthusiasm about starting their own ventures in microgreens production, bee keeping, and medicinal plant cultivation.
