Empowering Rural Women Through Micro Greens Cultivation Training in Maduranthagam on 23rd May 2026

A successful and inspiring training programme on Micro Greens Cultivation was recently conducted at the rural hamlet of Maduranthagam in Chengalpattu district, Tamil Nadu. The programme was specially organized to empower rural women with practical knowledge and entrepreneurial opportunities in the rapidly growing micro greens sector.

More than 50 women participants enthusiastically attended the training and gained valuable insights into the cultivation, maintenance, harvesting, and marketing of micro greens. The initiative focused on creating awareness about the importance of nutritious foods and sustainable livelihood opportunities for women in rural communities.

Micro greens are considered the future of nutritious food due to their rich concentration of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and health-promoting properties. These tender young greens are increasingly becoming popular among health-conscious consumers, hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, and urban households.

During the training programme, participants learned:

  • Basics of micro greens cultivation
  • Selection of quality seeds
  • Growing methods using trays and organic media
  • Water management and hygiene practices
  • Harvesting techniques
  • Packaging and value addition
  • Marketing opportunities and income generation

The programme highlighted how micro greens cultivation can be started with minimal investment and limited space, making it an ideal self-employment opportunity for rural women, self-help groups, and small entrepreneurs.

Experts and trainers explained the nutritional importance of crops such as wheatgrass, sunflower, mustard, radish, fenugreek, and green gram micro greens. Live demonstrations and interactive sessions helped participants gain practical exposure and confidence to begin cultivation on their own.

The event also encouraged women to become financially independent through sustainable agriculture-based enterprises. Participants expressed great interest and enthusiasm in adopting micro greens cultivation as an additional source of family income while also promoting healthy food habits in their communities.

Such training programmes play an important role in strengthening rural livelihoods, promoting women empowerment, and creating awareness about eco-friendly and nutritious food production systems in Tamil Nadu.

The organisers appreciated the active participation of all the women attendees and emphasized that continued training and support would help rural communities build a strong future in the field of organic and healthy food production.
