An orientation programme for Garo tribal farmers was
successfully conducted at Resubelpara in North Garo Hills, Meghalaya, on 18
August 2026, with the objective of introducing sustainable livelihood
opportunities, eco-friendly technologies and value-added rural enterprises. The
programme brought together three members from farmer clusters, who actively
participated in the sessions and gained practical knowledge on a range of
environmentally friendly enterprise activities. The orientation covered Areca
Leaf Plate Making, including the potential for converting naturally fallen
areca leaves into useful, biodegradable products. Participants were introduced
to the basic machinery, production process and possibilities for developing
this activity as a village-level enterprise. Another important session focused
on Banana Fibre Extraction and Mat Weaving. Participants learned how banana
pseudostems, which are often treated as agricultural waste, can be converted
into valuable fibre. The programme also highlighted opportunities for making
banana fibre mats, handicrafts and other value added products, creating
additional income opportunities for farming communities. Training inputs were
also provided on Handicraft Making, encouraging participants to explore locally
available natural and agricultural materials for creating marketable
