An orientation programme on Areca Leaf Plate Making, Banana Fibre Extraction and Banana Fibre Crafts was conducted for farmers and women’s groups in Williamnagar, East Garo Hills, Meghalaya, with the objective of transforming locally available agricultural resources into sustainable livelihood opportunities.
Williamnagar and the surrounding areas have abundant areca palms and banana plants. However, large quantities of fallen areca leaf sheaths and discarded banana biomass are often treated as agricultural waste. The programme highlighted how these readily available resources can be converted into useful, eco-friendly products and become a source of additional income for rural families and women’s groups.
Turning Areca Leaf Waste into Wealth
The participants were introduced to the complete process of collecting, cleaning, drying and grading naturally fallen areca leaf sheaths, followed by the process of converting them into attractive and biodegradable plates and other tableware.
Instead of allowing the sheaths to accumulate as waste, they can be collected systematically from farms and supplied to a community-level processing unit. With appropriate machinery, training and quality control, women’s groups can manufacture plates and bowls of different sizes for local markets, hotels, catering units, events and institutions.
The programme therefore emphasized the concept of “Waste to Wealth”—converting a freely available agricultural residue into a marketable product while simultaneously reducing waste and dependence on plastic-based disposable products.
Banana Fibre – Converting Farm Biomass into Livelihood
The second major component of the orientation was banana fibre extraction and value addition.
After harvesting bananas, large quantities of banana pseudostems and other biomass remain in the field. Instead of simply discarding this material, the pseudostem can be processed to extract natural fibre.
Participants were introduced to the possibilities of using banana fibre for making:
- Mats and floor products
- Baskets
- Bags
- Ropes and yarn
- Handicrafts
- Decorative products
- Table accessories
- Home utility products
- Other value-added natural-fibre products
Opportunity for Women’s Groups
A major focus of the Williamnagar orientation was women-led entrepreneurship.
Women’s Self-Help Groups and farmer groups can collectively undertake raw-material collection, processing, production, packaging and marketing. A cluster-based approach can help reduce individual investment, improve production capacity and create a common brand for locally manufactured eco-friendly products.
Such enterprises can create local employment without requiring farmers to depend entirely on conventional agricultural income. The combination of locally available raw materials, simple processing technologies, skill development and market linkages can provide a practical pathway towards rural entrepreneurship.
Building a Circular Rural Economy
The programme also introduced the concept of a circular rural economy, where agricultural residues are not viewed merely as waste but as valuable raw materials.
In Williamnagar, the availability of areca leaf sheaths and banana biomass provides a strong foundation for developing an integrated natural-fibre and eco-friendly product cluster.
The model can be developed as:
Farm → Collection of Agricultural Biomass → Processing → Value Addition → Product Manufacturing → Packaging → Marketing → Income Generation
This approach can simultaneously address agricultural waste, environmental concerns and rural livelihood generation.
From Orientation to Enterprise
The orientation programme was not limited to demonstrating technologies. It aimed to create awareness about the complete entrepreneurial ecosystem required to establish successful rural enterprises.

Areca leaf plates can provide an eco-friendly alternative to conventional disposable tableware, while banana fibre can open opportunities in handicrafts, mats, bags and other natural-fibre products. Research and field programmes in India have demonstrated the potential of both value-addition activities for income generation and rural employment.
For the farmers and women’s groups of Williamnagar, this initiative can become the beginning of a new livelihood model—“Local Resources, Local Skills, Local Production and Local Employment.”
With continued technical support, machinery, training and market linkages, the abundant areca leaf and banana resources of East Garo Hills can be transformed from agricultural waste into sustainable enterprises, creating income opportunities while promoting environmental protection and women’s economic empowerment.
