A unique and inspiring women empowerment programme based on the “Wealth Out of Waste” concept has been launched in Kanyakumari District of Tamil Nadu. The training programme focuses on creating eco-friendly handicrafts from banana bark, transforming agricultural waste into valuable livelihood opportunities for rural women.
The initiative aims to train nearly 100 women in the art of making banana bark handicrafts, enabling them to become self-reliant entrepreneurs and generate sustainable income for their families. Banana bark, which is usually discarded after harvesting bananas, is now being effectively utilized to create beautiful handmade products such as bags, baskets, decorative items, mats, pen holders, gift articles, and other eco-friendly crafts.
This programme not only promotes women empowerment but also encourages environmental sustainability by reducing agricultural waste and promoting the use of natural and biodegradable materials. The training will provide practical knowledge, skill development, product designing techniques, value addition methods, packaging, and marketing support to the participants.
The initiative is expected to create new livelihood opportunities for rural women, especially homemakers, self-help group members, and unemployed women who are looking for sustainable income sources. By learning banana bark craft making, women can establish small-scale cottage industries and market their handmade products locally as well as through exhibitions and online platforms.
Experts associated with the programme stated that banana bark handicrafts are gaining popularity due to the increasing demand for eco-friendly and handmade products across India and international markets. The programme also highlights the importance of utilizing locally available natural resources for economic development and environmental conservation.
The “Wealth Out of Waste” concept behind this training programme stands as a powerful example of how rural innovation and traditional craftsmanship can create employment opportunities while protecting nature. The organisers believe that this initiative will greatly improve the socio-economic status of women in the region and inspire many more sustainable livelihood projects in the future.
The training programme at Kanyakumari District reflects a strong commitment towards rural development, women entrepreneurship, skill enhancement, and green economic growth. It is expected to become a model initiative for promoting eco-friendly rural enterprises across Tamil Nadu.
