As part of its continued commitment to sustainable rural development and women's economic empowerment, Ecogreenunit Foundation successfully organized a Banana Fibre Crafts Training Programme for tribal women residing in Amaravathi Nagar within the Anamalai Tiger Reserve.
The programme was designed to create sustainable livelihood opportunities by transforming locally available banana pseudostems—an agricultural residue that is often discarded—into high-value eco-friendly handicrafts. Through this initiative, tribal women were introduced to innovative "Wealth Out of Waste" concepts, enabling them to generate income while conserving the environment.
During the hands-on training sessions, participants learned the complete process of banana fibre utilization, including fibre extraction, cleaning, drying, processing, and the preparation of craft materials. The women were trained to produce a variety of attractive and marketable products such as:
- Decorative baskets
- Handbags and shopping bags
- Table mats and coasters
- Pen stands
- Flower vases
- Gift articles
- Wall hangings
- Eco-friendly home décor items
- Utility and lifestyle products
The training emphasized quality production, product finishing, value addition, packaging, branding, and market linkage so that participants could establish sustainable micro-enterprises and self-help group (SHG)-based businesses. Special focus was given to entrepreneurship development, enabling the women to become financially independent while preserving their traditional skills and cultural heritage.
The programme also highlighted the environmental significance of banana fibre, a completely biodegradable and renewable natural fibre that reduces agricultural waste and supports a circular economy. By converting waste biomass into value-added products, the initiative contributes to climate resilience, waste reduction, and sustainable resource utilization.
Speaking on the occasion, the trainers from Ecogreenunit Foundation encouraged the participants to view banana fibre crafts as a long-term livelihood opportunity capable of generating year-round employment. The organization reaffirmed its commitment to providing continuous technical guidance, advanced skill development, product diversification, and market support to help tribal artisans reach wider national and international markets.
The enthusiastic participation of the tribal women reflected their eagerness to adopt eco-friendly livelihood options. The programme concluded with a product exhibition showcasing the handcrafted items prepared during the training, demonstrating the creativity and entrepreneurial potential of the participants.
This initiative stands as another milestone in Ecogreenunit Foundation's mission of promoting sustainable livelihoods, women empowerment, and community-based green enterprises by converting natural resources into valuable eco-friendly products while protecting the fragile ecosystem of the Anamalai Tiger Reserve.
