Orientation Programme on Eco-Friendly Livelihood Projects for Women Farmers Successfully Held in West Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya

The programme aimed to introduce rural women to environmentally sustainable enterprises that can generate income while conserving natural resources. The enthusiastic participation of women farmers reflected their growing interest in adopting green technologies and eco-friendly livelihood opportunities.

The orientation covered a wide range of practical and market-oriented training programmes, including:

  • Areca Leaf Plate Making
  • Banana Fibre Extraction
  • Banana Fibre Mat Weaving
  • Banana Fibre Handicrafts and Value-Added Products
  • Vetiver Cultivation
  • Preparation of Vetiver Value-Added Products

Resource persons from Ecogreenunit Foundation explained the commercial potential of each enterprise, highlighting the availability of raw materials, production techniques, market demand, value addition, and income generation opportunities. Special emphasis was given to utilizing locally available agricultural resources that are often considered waste, transforming them into eco-friendly products with excellent market value.

The programme also emphasized the importance of women's entrepreneurship, self-employment, and collective business models through Self Help Groups (SHGs). Participants were encouraged to adopt sustainable production practices that not only improve household income but also contribute to environmental protection by reducing plastic usage and promoting biodegradable products.

The orientation demonstrated how innovative rural enterprises such as banana fibre products, areca leaf tableware, and vetiver-based products can create year-round employment while supporting climate-resilient agriculture. These initiatives have the potential to empower rural communities, particularly women, by creating sustainable livelihoods rooted in local resources.
