Orientation Programme on Banana Fibre Craft Making for Tribal Women at Thirumoorthy Hills, Anaimalai Tiger Reserve.ON jUNE 20TH 2026

as  a part of its commitment to promoting sustainable livelihoods and empowering indigenous communities, Ecogreenunit Foundation successfully organized an Orientation Programme on Banana Fibre Craft Making for tribal women at Thirumoorthy Hills, located in the Anaimalai Tiger Reserve, on 20 June 2026.

The programme aimed to introduce tribal women to eco-friendly, skill-based livelihood opportunities by transforming locally available banana agricultural residues into value-added handicrafts. The initiative focused on enhancing household incomes while encouraging sustainable utilization of natural resources and reducing agricultural waste.

The orientation brought together enthusiastic tribal women from nearby settlements, who actively participated in the programme and expressed keen interest in learning innovative craft-making techniques that could be developed into home-based enterprises.

Transforming Agricultural Waste into Livelihood Opportunities

The programme highlighted the economic value of banana pseudostems, which are generally discarded after harvesting. Participants were introduced to scientific methods of extracting banana fibre and converting it into a wide range of marketable products, including:

  • Handcrafted baskets
  • Decorative items
  • Utility bags
  • Table mats
  • Wall hangings
  • Eco-friendly gift articles
  • Home décor products
  • Fashion accessories
  • Sustainable handicrafts for domestic and export markets

The participants learned how agricultural waste can be transformed into high-value products through simple technologies and creative craftsmanship, creating an additional source of income for rural families.

Technical Orientation and Enterprise Development

Resource persons from Ecogreenunit Foundation explained the complete banana fibre value chain, covering:

  • Banana fibre extraction techniques
  • Fibre cleaning and drying methods
  • Processing and grading
  • Craft-making techniques
  • Product finishing and quality improvement
  • Packaging and branding
  • Cost estimation and pricing
  • Marketing strategies and market linkages
  • Formation of Self Help Groups (SHGs) and community enterprises

The session also emphasized quality standards, product innovation, customer preferences, and opportunities in eco-conscious markets that increasingly demand sustainable and biodegradable products.

Women Empowerment Through Green Enterprises

A major focus of the programme was to encourage tribal women to establish micro-enterprises based on locally available resources. Participants were informed about opportunities to work collectively through Self Help Groups, producer collectives, and cooperative models that can improve production capacity and strengthen market access.

The orientation highlighted how banana fibre craft enterprises can be operated from villages with relatively low investment, making them well suited for women seeking flexible, home-based income-generating activities while balancing family responsibilities.

Environmental and Social Benefits

The programme emphasized that banana fibre utilization supports environmental conservation by reducing agricultural waste, promoting circular economy practices, and minimizing dependence on synthetic materials. It also demonstrated how eco-friendly handicrafts contribute to biodiversity conservation by encouraging sustainable resource use around protected landscapes such as the Anaimalai Tiger Reserve.

By creating alternative livelihood opportunities, such initiatives can help strengthen local economies while reducing pressure on forest resources and supporting long-term conservation goals.

Interactive Learning and Future Support

The orientation included technical presentations, live demonstrations, interactive discussions, and a question-and-answer session, enabling participants to gain practical knowledge about banana fibre processing and craft production. The tribal women actively interacted with the trainers and explored opportunities for developing commercially viable products.

Ecogreenunit Foundation assured continued technical guidance, advanced skill development programmes, entrepreneurship training, value addition support, and market linkages to help participants establish sustainable banana fibre craft enterprises.

Conclusion

The Orientation Programme on Banana Fibre Craft Making at Thirumoorthy Hills marked another important step towards empowering tribal women through environmentally sustainable livelihood initiatives. By combining traditional craftsmanship with modern value-addition techniques, the programme demonstrated how locally available natural resources can be transformed into profitable enterprises that generate income, preserve the environment, and promote inclusive rural development.

Ecogreenunit Foundation remains dedicated to supporting tribal communities through innovative green livelihood programmes that foster self-reliance, women's entrepreneurship, and sustainable economic growth while conserving the rich ecological heritage of the Anaimalai Tiger Reserve.
