Empowering Women Through Banana Fibre-Based Livelihood Opportunities Awareness Programme on Banana Fibre Extraction, Mat Weaving and Crafts Making Date: 28 October 2026 Venue: Pollachi, Tamil Nadu

An awareness programme on Banana Fibre Extraction, Banana Fibre Mat Weaving, and Banana Fibre Crafts Making was organised for women’s groups at Pollachi on 28 October 2026. The programme aimed to create awareness about the potential of banana agricultural waste as a valuable resource for developing sustainable livelihoods, promoting women’s entrepreneurship, and generating additional income for rural communities.

Turning Agricultural Waste into Wealth

Banana cultivation generates large quantities of agricultural residues, particularly banana stems and sheaths, which are often discarded after harvesting. However, these materials can be converted into valuable products through appropriate technologies and innovative processing methods.

The programme highlighted the importance of extracting fibre from banana stems and utilising the fibre to manufacture a variety of eco-friendly products. Participants were introduced to the concept of converting agricultural waste into marketable products, thereby supporting the circular economy and reducing environmental waste.

Key Areas Covered

1. Banana Fibre Extraction

Participants were introduced to the process of extracting natural fibre from banana stems using suitable fibre extraction machinery. The session highlighted the potential of banana fibre as a sustainable raw material for various value-added products.

2. Banana Fibre Mat Weaving

The programme explained how extracted banana fibre can be utilised for weaving mats and other useful products. Banana fibre mat weaving offers opportunities for women’s groups to establish small-scale production units and develop income-generating activities.

3. Banana Fibre Crafts Making

The participants were also introduced to the possibilities of making attractive handicrafts and utility products using banana fibre and related agricultural residues. These products can be developed for local markets, exhibitions, handicraft outlets, and other potential marketing channels.

Promoting Women’s Entrepreneurship

The awareness programme emphasised the importance of empowering women through skill development, entrepreneurship training, and sustainable livelihood initiatives. By adopting banana fibre-based activities, women’s self-help groups and community-based organisations can explore opportunities to establish micro-enterprises and create employment within their communities.

The initiative also highlighted the importance of utilising locally available agricultural resources, encouraging innovation, and promoting environmentally responsible production practices.

A Step Towards a Sustainable Future

The programme at Pollachi represented an effort to promote the effective utilisation of banana agricultural residues and encourage women’s groups to explore new livelihood opportunities. Banana fibre-based enterprises have the potential to combine environmental sustainability with rural economic development.

Through continued awareness, technical guidance, skill development, and market linkages, such initiatives can contribute to strengthening women’s economic independence and creating sustainable employment opportunities in rural areas.

Ecogreenunit, Coimbatore, continues to promote the concept of “Wealth Out of Waste” by encouraging the conversion of agricultural residues into valuable products and supporting sustainable entrepreneurship among rural communities.

Banana waste is not merely waste—it is a valuable resource for women’s empowerment, rural entrepreneurship, and a greener future.
